Deerfield Beach is a city in Broward County, Florida, located just south of Boca Raton on the Palm Beach County line. Deerfield Beach is a short drive away from Fort Lauderdale, and an easy commute to West Palm Beach.
Deerfield Beach dates back to 1890 when a small settlement settled on the banks of the Hillsboro River and named itself Hillsborough in the river’s honor. As the population grew to 20 by 1898, the town changed its name to Deerfield for the deer that grazed along the Hillsboro River.
As the town’s population continued to grow, the Florida East Coast Railroad constructed tracks in the early 1900s en route to Miami. The Old Deerfield Beach Seaboard Air Line Railway Station now serves as a stop for Amtrak and Tri-Rail. Deerfield’s early settlers were mostly farmers who grew pineapples, squash, tomatoes, and green beans, and fished along the Intracoastal Waterway. Although Deerfield remained a largely agricultural-based community, the town changed its name to Deerfield Beach in 1939 to make tourists aware that the city had a beach.
Deerfield Beach has a tropical climate with hot summer days, frequent thunderstorms in the summer, and less constant rain for the rest of the year. The winters, lasting from late November through early March, tend to be balmy with an occasional cold front. The weather in the summer tends to stay in the high 80s to low nineties, while in the winter the weather typically stays in the upper 70s to low 80s during the day, and dips into the 60s at night.
